What is Kawasaki disease?

Kawasaki disease is the result of an acute inflammatory condition in childhood that can affect blood vessels. If the childhood illness is not adequately treated, it can result in damage to the coronary arteries of the heart leading to coronary aneurysms and thrombosis (clotting). We work closely with Dr. Jane Burns at Rady’s Children’s Hospital to help manage our patients. The arteries responsible for transporting blood to the heart may become inflamed, leading to bulging of the arterial wall (aneurysm) and inflamed heart muscle (myocarditis). The cause of Kawasaki disease in childhood is unknown. Research is focused on an environmental trigger that affects only genetically susceptible individuals.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Adults after Kawasaki Disease

The first step in diagnosing the condition may involve a coronary artery calcium score to assess for calcification and aneurysms of your coronary arteries as well as a stress test to evaluate for inadequate blood flow to your heart.

We treat patients with large aneurysms with:

  • Blood thinners and anti-platelet medications like aspirin
  • Statins to promote blood vessel health

If the heart and arteries have been damaged from Kawasaki disease in childhood, the extent of the damage must be evaluated and appropriate medications prescribed. In some very severe cases, coronary artery bypass surgery may be advised.

The types of heart damage that can result from adult Kawasaki disease include:

  • Coronary artery inflammation
  • Aneurysms
  • Blood clots
  • Heart attack

If you or a family member has been diagnosed with adult Kawasaki disease, our team of heart specialists at San Diego Cardiac Center can perform a range of advanced diagnostic tests to identify any heart problems and develop a treatment plan.
